You can sit outside, on these high chairs opposite the bar or in the booths in the back….Untitled

The specials are strung up on lines on the walls…twitter followers saw the one I picked yesterday.

This my friends is deep fried pound cake with vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce. Yes you read that correct.   I wanted to slap the restaurant owner after we took the first bite because it sounds ridiculous but tasted that damn good.  I kid not.

Since moving to New York I’ve built up a mental list of my fave hang out spots.  Shopstyle asked me to share my top 3 and this is one of them.  Sugarfreak restaurant – a Louisianna home style shabby chic gem in Astoria Queens.
You don’t know this but I’m a picky eater. Michael is born and raised in New Orleans and I’m Caribbean by origin so between the two of us our expectations for great food is sky high. Sugarfreak never disappoints every time we’re there (once a month)!   The food is just stupid delicious. The restaurant decor is a kitschy-cute mis-match of retro furniture and random flea market finds.
This is one of those places that I hope doesn’t get spotted by a best-places-to-eat TV show so it doesn’t get busier than it already is.  I want it to stay as our secret find.  If you ever visit New York just get the cab or the N train. It’s worth the trip. The place is packed at nights and lunch. We shot these photos during a quiet time so we wouldn’t bother any customers.

I’ll follow up with the next two spots soon.

I’m glad you like posts like this. I always prefer to get insider type recs versus a travel guide.
