…is quite frankly. A mess. I am the “before” in wardrobe makeover programs.
The above is the current rotation that greets me daily. What you do not see is stored close by: knits are folded away in drawers. Coats and jackets are in a little coat room. Shoes line the standing mirror and the end of my bed (the rest are inside a vintage standing closet).
More clothes are downstairs in a basement hanging on clothes rails. I dream of one day swinging open double doors into an expansive space of multiple shelving systems and pared down clothes hung neatly in sections. I have seen the immaculate wardrobes of others and my mouth opens slowly in awe. I have also seen those who embrace a shabbier chic approach: items drape everywhere in a mish mash of stylish pieces that feels like a girl in a permanent state of fun try ons. For me it’s the latter aesthetic that appeals. The Aladdin’s cave imperfectness.
However there is a fine line between shabby chic and a big mess, hence the reason for this post.
I’m trying to think of the best way to organize everything. Should I group by color or by category regardless of color? I’m thinking by category first then each category by color. What do you do?
ps. Check my FB for a video peek of some fave pieces in the wardrobe.
Vanessa Adams says:
Category and then color is the best way. But you have to what works best for you. You should also categorize your bags.

Compared to mine I would t say your wardrobe is a mess. I have clothes just thrown in the bottom of mine
ZADIN says:
It’s messier than mine… But this is not totally bad, I’m sure that after you organize you won’t find anything.

Thx Maggie! I definitely want to sort it though before it goes too fare into shabby sh** !

Well organising by category and color is more practical. But if you’re going for shabby chic organising just by color will give a prettier and more inspirational effect I think.

I hardly have any clothes but I like to group in category and then arrange them in rainbow order. I also keep similar items next to each other (e.g. tops and jumpers)I also like to change it around for the season so I recently moved all my jumpers/cardigans so they are easier to get to and any solely summer clothes are packed away in drawers. It makes it so much easier in the morning when I’m getting ready for work.

Sara says:
It’s a beautiful mess at least…. my own wardrobe needs to be over hauled for winter (summer clothes go into storage and winter clothes comes out) and probably could use a purge (except that usually means I’ll just go buy more things)
Karen says:
LOL sounds like me but purging SHOULD leave what I both need AND want to keep if done well to avoid too many additional unexpected purchasing

what i would give to own this wardrobe! and i dont mind the mess either!!

Actually, its not THAT messy. But I would organize by category. I normally don’t worry about the color coordination, only if I have a lot of items in one category. I don’t care for too much order, but I am always torn about whether to hang or fold my knits. I am jelly over our closet btw!

Makes me feel a little better that your closet isn’t perfectly organized! I am a mess–clothes everywhere, packed in suitcases, shoes lined under the bed and on the shelves of my tv stand lolzzz

Quite a mess, I agree – but so much fun for a whole new makeover! I personally love these challenges and would be so glad to help. I coordinate my clothes from color – I read once that it makes it easier to get dressed and also makes you aware of what color you have the most of, so that you don’t buy more of it and concentrate on the color you have the less of.

I use to have the same problem with my wardrobe and the solution was downsize.
What I do before I organize it rid myself of this I will not wear again. Hard to do but must be done. Next, I make piles:wear now, store, sell and give away. Then, group into season winter/fall & spring/summer (current season goes up front) lastly I group buy color and length. As well as hanger plays and important part I color code by hangers it helps save space and find things more inefficiently.
Hope this helps.

Thank you! I am going through a get rid of pile now. A purge is definitely the first step before the sort out. I like yours.

Looks like you need a bigger closet 🙂
Pearl says:
I divide my closet according to occasions and seasons. Like formal, casual, sleepwear, the inbetweeners and so on. And I fold my casual pieces and hang formal pieces. The best thing for bags (if you like to display them) is to invest in a coat rack/hat stand or a even an easel to hang stuff like bags and jewellery. I store my jewellery in this plastic mini cupboard with 3 drawers, so it’s accessible. Hope this helps! PS- I FRICKIN’ WANT EVERYTHING IN YOUR CLOSET.

I sort my clothes by type. Long sleeve, short sleeve, short dresses, long dresses, tanks and camisoles, sweaters, vests… It helps to have a bit of a closet storage system with short racks and a tall rack and some shelves. And all my bags go in a big clear storage bin so they don’t fall on my head and are easy to get to.
I opt for organized but I do love the look of the boho mish mash draping scarves… Just don’t have time to deal with that early in the morning.
