Every Autumn there are key pieces that work with everything else that you already have. They update them and when chosen well, will last you for years.
Click through for the ten that do with outfit ideas on how to wear each.
Over the knee boots
Wear over jeans or with long knits. Options range from low mid to high heel in suede or leather.
Where To Get Them:
Stuart Weitzman Highland boots (seen above). Blink black over the knee boots. Stuart Weitzman Lowland boots (seen in this outfit post). Sam Edelman Elina boots.
One Suede Piece
Take one basic and update it in suede e.g. A suede skirt, suede bag or suede boots. Optional on being a nod to the seventies trend but not mandatory. A classic cut will last forever.
Where To Get Them:
Tibi Suede Wrap skirt (seen above). H&M Knee High Suede boots or suede bag. And B Marlo Suede jacket. Halogen Suede A-Line skirt.
Faux Leather
It coolifies everything and makes an outfit look expensive without it needing to be. Best takes are in skinny pants, skirts or biker jackets.
Where To Get Them:
7 For All Mankind Faux Crackle Skinny pants. Ezra Faux Leather pants (on sale). Topshop Faux Leather Biker jacket. Zara’s biker trousers.
The Oversized Knit
Cozy and food baby friendly, oversized knits universally suit all. Pick solid colors that won’t date and balance them with skinny jeans, pants or leather mini skirts. Add a block heel for the vertically challenged (see below on ankle boots).
Where To Get Them:
Treasure & Bond Sweater Dress. Generation Love Turtle Neck. Forever21 Longline. NLST Fishermen jumper.
The Fur Vest
The one piece that upgrades every leather jacket and coat instantly. Get in black, grey or camel.
Where To Get Them:
Caden Faux Fux Gilet. Topshop Shaggy Faux Fur. DKNY Faux Fur Gilet. Nome parka that includes a detachable fur gilet.
Mannish shoes
Smart and casual this is the one comfortable shoe that adds polish to your outfit.
Stylist Rachael Wang summed it up: “You can be a tomboy and still be sexy and attractive.” See her full interview in The Full Monty here.
Where To Get Them:
Cole Haan Pince Leather loafers. Topshop Kindred Loafers (less masculine). Sigerson Morrison Savana Oxfords (code: HOLIDAY for 25% till November 15)
The Square Scarf/Shawl
Wear them wrapped around your neck or open draped over shoulders. Either way this is a two for one. It’s like a portable mini blanket.
Where To Get Them:
Asos oversized scarf in jewel stripes or Kiboots reversible wool poncho.
The Shearling Jacket
This is your leather jacket winterized. Get one that’s slightly oversized in dark colors.
Where To Get Them:
ACNE Velocite Shearling jacket (shown above). Laundry Shearling Jacket. Neon Rose Oversized jacket.
The Tall Ankle Boot
Goes with faux leather leggings, skinny jeans and midi skirts. Get ones cut close to the leg to elongate. Block heels cut the wobble factor and just look better to be honest.
Where To Get Them:
Reiss Marley Wood Heel boot. Topshop Tortoiseshell Heel boots. River Island Seventies Suede boots.
One Brimmed Hat
Beanies aren’t going anywhere but I love the contrast of slouchy soft jackets and knits with a brimmed hat. It’s the play on masculine feminine, instantly makes an outfit cooler and is a God send for bad hair days.
Where To Get Them:
Rag & Bone Leather Trimmed Wool hat. Whistles Fedora (code: HOLIDAY for 25% till Nov 15). Asos Burgundy Wool hat.
